MAputo Municipal Council Intends To Collect 61 Million USD In Taxes And Fees
Maputo, 5 Jan (AIM) – Maputo Municipal Council intends to collect in the current year 3.9 billion Meticais (about 61 million dollars, at the current exchange rate) in taxes and fees.
According to the deputy director of Planning and Finance in the Maputo Municipal Council, Dinis Nhancume, cited in Thursday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, in the whole municipal area, there are 16 posts responsible for collecting taxes and fees.
Of the 90 existing taxes and fees, the most significant are the municipal vehicle tax, which is paid from 1 January to 31 March; the municipal poll tax which is an annual tax of 510 meticais, to be paid by every adult; the municipal property tax; the fee for economic activity which is paid in three instalments; and the advertising tax.
“Our expectation is to collect the taxes better than we did last year, to try to reach 100 percent”, Nhamcume said, adding that “from the work done last year, we have identified some lines of action that can help us until we reach the desired levels.”
The municipal property tax, the deputy director says, has caused the most problems for municipal authorities, because few people pay voluntarily or on time.
“The Municipality of Maputo has just over 200,000 properties”, he said, advancing that only about 21,000 property owners pay the tax voluntarily.
Nhancume also revealed that last year, the municipality managed to collect about three billion Meticais in fees and taxes, which was an implementation rate of 80%. This year, however, the goal is to reach 100%.
