Mozambique Remains Neutral In Russia/Ukraine War
Maputo, 3 Feb (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday reiterated the Mozambican government’s position of neutrality towards Russia’s war against Ukraine.
He was speaking in Maputo at a reception for the diplomatic corps accredited in Mozambique on the occasion of the New Year.
“Faced with this conflict”, said Nyusi, “Mozambique remains consistent in its position of seeking a solution based on dialogue between the parties, as the most secure way to end the war and return to peaceful coexistence between the brotherly counrries of Russia and Ukraine”.
“We are certain that this war will only end with dialogue”, he said. “This should be encouraged”.
Nyusi claimed that Mozambique’s position is in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter and arises from a command in the Mozambican Constitution, which guides the country’s foreign policy.
He urged all the countries represented in Mozambique to make a contribution, by persuading the belligerents to cease hostilities immediately and to enter into dialogue in a frank, direct and constructive matter, to reach an effective and lasting peace between the two neighbouring states.
The Russian invasion began almost a year ago, on 24 February 2022. Stiff resistance by the Ukrainian armed forces drove the Russians back from Kiev and Karkhiv, but the Russians still hold a large swathe of eastern Ukraine, and there is no sign of the war ending any time soon.
