Nyusi Demands Flexibility And Scientific Approaches IN THE Fight Against Terrorism
Maputo, 6 Feb (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday demanded scientific approaches and greater flexibility in the training of army cadres for a better response to the terrorism that has been plaguing parts of the northern Province of Cabo Delgado, since 2017.
He was speaking in Maputo at a ceremony where he swore into office Andre Mahunguane, as Chief of Staff of the Presidential Guard, and Eugenio Matlaba, as the Deputy Commander of the Samora Machel Military Academy, which is based in the northern city of Nampula. Nyusi also promoted both officers to the rank of brigadier.
“The current framework of threats to our country requires bold responses from the Armed Forces and the Samora Machel Military Academy, as a trainer of cadres and thinking core of the defence sector, should be able to generate solutions that are more appropriate and in line with the challenges”, Nyusi said.
The training at the Academy, he added, “should be adjusted to the requirements in the fight against terrorism and natural disasters, finding the best solutions through scientific research.”
According to the president, it is essential that the newly sworn-in officers should continue to imprint greater dynamism and flexibility in the training process, “without ever neglecting or forgetting the civic and patriotic values, intrinsic to the Mozambican Armed Forces.”
Nyusi also said that officers trained at the Samora Machel Military Academy should be carriers of skills capable of making a positive difference, within the current national security situation, characterized by multiple threats, especially with the occurrence of attacks by terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado.
“As deputy-commander of the military academy, Matlaba should also assist his commander in the constant search for solutions in the management of infrastructures and all logistics,” he said.
“We hope that the Academy will continue to internationalize, through cooperation agreements with foreign counterpart institutions and national universities”, added the President.
Matlaba is taking office in the year of the Academy’s 20th anniversary. Last year, he completed his PhD, “and based on his experience, we want to challenge him to make his contribution so that this institution continues to make Mozambicans proud”, Nyusi said.
For Nyusi, the new Chief of Staff of the Presidential Guard should modernize its work. He praised Mahunguane for his work in Cabo Delgado “demonstrating excellent skills in commanding troops on the ground, instilling courage and a change of attitude that allowed the troops and his command to achieve important victories in the pursuit of the terrorists.”
