Over 3,000 Cases Of Cholera In Two Months
Maputo, 4 Feb (AIM) – The Mozambican health authorities have recorded 3,026 cases of cholera in the past two months, according to Health Minister Armindo Tiago.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Tiago said the main outbreaks of cholera had been in the northern province of Niassa (1,870 cases), and the central province of Sofala (717 cases). There have also been cases recorded in Zambezia and Cabo Delgado.
The latest outbreak was in the western province of Tete, with over 200 cases diagnosed in the past week. The number of cases was increasing in Tete, but declining in the other affected provinces, said Tiago.
The Tete provincial health authorities have reported six deaths from cholera in Angonia and Mutarara districts.
In southern Mozambique, the only province that had recorded cases of cholera was Gaza, “but for more than four days no further cases have been reported from this province”, said the Minister.
As for the Covid-19 respiratory disease, Tiago said the number of cases recorded was oscillating, just as the number of people tested for Covid-19 was oscillating. But, in general, the number of cases of the disease in Mozambique was on the decline, Tiago said.
