Maputo, 03 May (AIM) – About ten soldiers of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) are believed to have been injured on Sunday after their vehicle fell into an ambush perpetrated by islamist terrorists in Muidumbe district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, according to Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”
According to the paper’s sources, the ambushed vehicle was carrying, in addition to military personnel, many food products to supply the positions held by the forces that have been pursuing terrorists in Muidumbe since last week.
“The vehicle came from the position of the FADM, in the village Muambula, where it went in search of food products, and then fell into the ambush”, the sources said. On the same day, several military vehicles were seen, including an ambulance.
The military ambulance left the town of Mueda and was seen several times taking the same route, presumably evacuating dead or wounded military personnel.
During the ambush, writes the paper, citing local sources, the terrorists took food products and some weapons that were in the possession of the FADM soldiers.
Cabo Delgado has been plagued by terrorism since October 2017 and, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the conflict has left one million people displaced and about 4,000 dead.
Since July 2021, the Mozambican defence and security forces, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), has been liberating districts near natural gas projects, which had previously been occupied by the terrorists.
