Maputo, 15 May (AIM) – Mozambique must graduate 1,728 specialist nurses by 2025 in order to meet the growth of the national hospital network, under the Plan on Accelerated Training of Health Professionals implemented by the Ministry of Health.
According to Deputy Health Minister Ilesh Jani, the country currently has around 18,000 nursing professionals, of whom 10,000 are in the general services and over 8,000 in the mother and child services.
“These numbers are still less than is needed. For example, the ratio of general nurses in Mozambique is 3.1 per 10,000 inhabitants against the minimum indicator demanded by the World Health Organization of 3.4 per 10,000 inhabitants”, Jani said on Friday, in Maputo, in the context of International Nurses Day.
According to the deputy-minister, the current ratio will continuously suffer the impact of the rapid growth of the population “but during the period 2016-2022, 5,893 nurses graduated, which was more than the planned number of 4,741 graduations.”
Jani also said that there is a need for training nurses in specialized areas such as neonatology, intensive care, anaesthesiology and instrumentation.
He encouraged the health professionals to apply professionalism and ethics in their daily work even if they find themselves in strained circumstances.
“We encourage you to fight against all the evils that threaten the good name of nurses and of all the health professionals. We must fight against mistreatment, the robbery of health equipment and the irrational use of state funds, as well as illegal charges”, he stressed.
