Maputo, 26 May (AIM) – The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said on Friday that he wants to strengthen the bilateral relations between Mozambique and Ukraine and discuss new opportunities for cooperation.
On his first visit to Mozambique, Kuleba was received in Maputo by President Filipe Nyusi.
He declared “I came to Mozambique, instructed by President Zelenskyy to build the future of our bilateral cooperation. We see a potential in developing trade between our countries, we want to solve problems concerned with food insecurity in the region and we want to become friends”.
Speaking to reporters, Kuleba said there are several areas in which the two nations can cooperate, and he hoped that an economic forum between Mozambique and Ukraine can be organized.
“We see many opportunities”, he added. “I and President Nyusi have agreed that we shall organize an event between our chambers of commerce. To stimulate trade, we must have support on both sides. We see potential in foodstuffs, the pharmaceutical industry, edible oils, industrial machinery and identification services”.
Kuleba mentioned identification services, because Ukraine is regarded as one of the countries most advanced in the digitalization of public services.
This year, Ukraine also hopes to open an embassy in Mozambique. To date, diplomatic relations have been handled by the Ukrainian embassy in South Africa.
The Mozambican Deputy Foreign Minister, Manuel Goncalves, told the journalists “we reviewed our bilateral relations, and the historical relations between Mozambique and Ukraine, but above all our talks focused on future cooperation”.
Among the areas identified for cooperation, he added, was agriculture. “We want to learn from the experience of Ukraine in developing agriculture, particularly in producing wheat in Mozambique”, said Goncalves.
