Maputo, 9 Jun (AIM) – Mozambique’s Central Regional Water Company has disconnected public institutions for non-payment of their water bills.
Among the sensitive bodies that suddenly lost their water supply was Quelimane Central Hospital, the largest health unit in Zambezia province.
The Secretary of State for Zambezia, Cristina Mafumo, on Thursday told reporters that efforts were under way to pay the hospital’s bills. The hospital management said the cut will have no immediate effects, because the hospital’s water reservoirs were full when the supply was cut.
There is enough water to meet the hospital’s needs for five days. But if the water supply is not reconnected within those five days, then the hospital will be in trouble.
Other institutions that lost their water supply include the office of the Zambezia provincial governor, Pio Matos. The governor’s office owed five million meticais (about 78,000 US dollars).
The water company says its clients owe a total of 182 million meticais. The State is the largest debtor, owing 52 million meticais.
Like Cristina Mafumo, Pio Matos promised to pay the State’s water bills – but he was critical of the company’s decision to cut the water supply to the hospital.
