Maputo, 10 Jul (AIM) – Unknown individuals have burned dozens of boats of fishermen who have returned to the beach of Pequeué village, in the Quiterajo administrative post, Macomia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique.”
According to sources cited by the paper, the destruction of the boats, mostly sailing boats which can hold two to three people, happened in the last few days when the returnees to Pequeué were ordered to leave the region for Pangane village to give space to the Defense and Security Forces for patrolling.
Cabo Delgado has been plagued by Islamic terrorism since 2017. Since July 2021, the Mozambican defense and security forces, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), have been liberating districts previously occupied by the Jihadists, notably Mocímboa da Praia and the neighboring district of Palma.
The coercive movement of the returnees, according to sources, has left the fishermen frustrated who are now without means of income. The fish was supplied to traders and they, in turn, resold it at the main market in Macomia town.
Currently, safety conditions do not allow fishermen or artisans to enter the forest to locate trees for making new boats.
