Maputo, 18 Jul (AIM) – Eleven prisoners have escaped from jail in Namacurra district, in the central Mozambican province of Zambézia.
According to the Zambézia provincial police spokesperson, Sidner Lonzo, the prisoners, all of them men, escaped on Sunday.
“The inmates began by destroying the bars of the cells where they were detained and then fled”, Lonzo said, adding that the corporation, in coordination with the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), is working to capture the fugitives.
“So far, at least one of the eleven escapees has been captured. We are on the trail of the remaining fugitives”, he said.
The police force (PRM) in Zambezia revealed that two other individuals, one of them a driver, were neutralized on Sunday in possession of 44 gallons of 20 liters of fuel allegedly stolen from the company mining heavy mineral sands in Inhassunge district. In their possession, PRM also recovered 27,000 meticais (about 420 US dollars, at the current exchange rate).
