Maputo, 9 Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has detained, in the central province of Zambézia, a man who had escaped after abandoning 100 kilos of methamphetamine in Mocuba district, two years ago.
According to the SERNIC spokesperson in Zambézia, Maximino Amílcar, the arrestee is accused of drug trafficking and money laundering.
“He owns a bottle store and he used to wear uniform belonging to the Mozambican Defense and Security Forces (FDS) to escape inspection by the authorities during the transport of drugs to the northern provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado”, explained Amílcar.
The spokesperson also said that the man is one of the main drug traffickers in the province, with strong relations with the trafficking networks throughout southern Africa.
The arrestee (who has not been named) has confessed his involvement in the crimes. However, he claims he does not understand why he is the only person detained while his partners are still on the run.
