Maputo, 29 Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has arrested a man supposedly involved in a kidnapping that took place in 2021 in the central province of Manica.
According to SERNIC spokesman, Paulo Candieiro, “we had an arrest warrant against him for kidnapping a citizen of Indian origin in 2021.”
The suspect, he said, was detained last Wednesday, along with four other people with whom he carried out robberies in the province.
“He claims to be Mozambican, but he didn’t have any identification document”, Candieiro said. (A report carried by the independent television channel, STV, however, said that the man, who was not named, is a Zimbabwean citizen).
The General Director of (SERNIC), Nelson Rego, acknowledged in January that some kidnapping cases in the country have involved people working in the institutions of the administration of justice.
According to data unveiled by the Confederation of Mozambican Business Associations (CTA), the ransoms paid to kidnappers have cost Mozambican business people at least 2.2 billion meticais (about 34.4 million US dollars).
