Nampula (Mozambique), 18 Sep (AIM) – The electoral administration bodies, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, the largest constituency in the country, intend to hire 400 provincial trainers to prepare 7,293 polling station staff in the municipal election to be held on 11 October.
As a result, the training of 440 provincial delegates began on Saturday in all eight municipalities that will be voting in the local elections in the province, with 400 being hired at the end.
Data collected by AIM indicates that 205 candidates are being trained in Nampula city, with 186 to be selected for the elections.
The training of provincial delegates ends on 22 September, and on the 25th the next phase should begin, according to the electoral calendar.
The chairperson of the Nampula District Elections Commission, Ossufo Ossufo, at the opening of the training, recommended that the trainers in particular prioritize the sharing of notions of ethics and morality.
“With this training we are entering the most decisive phase towards the 2023 municipal elections. The successful holding of the municipal elections in this city will depend on good work. We ask for thoughtfulness, creativity, patience, understanding and a spirit of tolerance” said Ossufo, who is also a religious leader.
He added that “as well as talking about technical and legal procedures, you must stress ethical and moral aspects with the trainees, since our trainers are mostly young people who need principles”.
“If they only work with technical and legal procedures, forgetting about morals, we will have elections with a lot of upheaval and, as managers, we wouldn’t want that to happen in the city of Nampula”, he warned.
Speaking at the event, the district director of the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE), Evaristo Veleta, called on the trainers to give the candidates useful knowledge and tools for the entire electoral process.
According to data from the provincial branch of STAE, 1.25 million potential voters have been registered in the eight municipalities, namely Nampula City, Nacala Port, Mozambique Island, Angoche, Monapo, Ribáuè, Malema and Mossuril.
