Maputo, 30 Nov (AIM) – At least 645 former Renamo guerrillas are now receiving their pensions under the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme, agreed between the government and Renamo.
Between 2019 and June of this year, about 5,000 members of the Renamo militia were demobilised under the DDR, and the final 16 Renamo military bases were closed.
According to President Filipe Nyusi, who was speaking on Wednesday at the opening of a meeting of the Coordinating Council of the Ministry of the Interior, a three-day event taking place in Maputo, “to date, 645 DDR beneficiaries have started receiving their pensions. DDR remains at the top of the agenda.”
Nyusi revealed that on Tuesday the registration of pensioners under the DDR was still taking place in the northern province of Nampula, with the support of local administrative authorities and service providers.
“Around 240 beneficiaries living in Nampula province are expected to present their documentation so that they can enjoy their rights”, he said, explaining that “the logistical activities for pensioners indicated by the pensions working group, supported by the secretariat for the peace process, will continue in December in the district of Cuamba, Niassa province.”
Nyusi also urged everyone to collaborate in the process and asked for calm, especially for those who still do not have all their documentation. He also asked DDR beneficiaries to avoid misinformation so as not to demoralize or harm pensioners.
