Maputo, 1 Dec (AIM) – Mozambican Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane has challenged tour operators to make green investments to ensure that Mozambique’s tourism sector contributes to the country’s sustainable economic growth.
According to Maleiane, who was speaking at the opening of the 9th edition of the Mozambique International Tourism Fair (FIKANI) in Maputo, green investments also contribute to generating employment and income, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
“To this end, the development of tourism in our country must be geared towards the proper exploitation of environmental resources. The green investment approach must also ensure the creation of synergies so that communities can reap the benefits of tourism ventures”, he said.
The Prime Minister recommended that tourism developments respect the various natural ecosystems, “where tourism developments are or will be located.”
He challenged all those involved in developing the country’s tourism sector to invest in innovative solutions that contribute, in an integrated way, to promoting sustainable tourism that takes into account current and future economic, social and environmental impacts.
Maleiane explained that the motto of the ceremony “FIKANI for Sustainable Tourism” calls on everyone to reflect deeply on how to consolidate the development of tourism while protecting the environment and conserving biodiversity, “especially at a time when our country is facing challenges associated with the impacts of climate change.”
According to Maleiane, only in this way can tourism effectively become an industry and bring more gains to the economy and the well-being of Mozambicans.
Maleiane visited the stands at the Fair and interacted with national and foreign exhibitors linked to different areas of the tourism sector, including hotels and restaurants, travel agencies, airlines and educational institutions.
Over 200 exhibitors are taking part in the four-day event and the organizers expect to welcome more than 6,000 visitors, including tourism and cultural service providers, representatives of travel agencies, accommodation establishments and restaurants.
Launched in 2013, FIKANI serves as the government’s main platform for promoting the meeting of professionals from the hospitality, tourism and culture sectors.
It is organized by the government, through the National Tourism Institute, and has the support of the Mozambican Tourism and Hospitality Federation (FEMOTUR).
