Maputo, 14 Dec (AIM) – The Mozambican journalist and TV commentator João Chamusse was murdered with a blunt instrument shortly after midnight on Wednesday by unknown assailants at his home in the KaTembe municipal district, in Maputo city.
At around 12 noon on Thursday, the police arrived at the scene for forensics and to remove the body. However, the police have not yet released any details on the case.
According to a source in his family, cited in Thursday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”, his body was found in the yard, with signs of blows to his head.
Earlier in the evening, he had been at a gathering with friends, not far from his house. He left them at around 01.00, saying he was going home to sleep.
Chamusse edited an electronic daily “Ponte por Ponte”, and was a regular commentator on the independent television channel, TV Sucesso, where he was highly critical of the Mozambican government.
In the late 1990s, he briefly edited the newssheet “Mediafax”. He then became one of the founders of the weekly “Canal de Mocambique”, which was always hostile to the government.
The obituary in “Carta de Mocambique”, notes that Chamusse used to praise KaTembe as a municipal district where there was almost no crime – so he certainly did not expect to be murdered on his own doorstep.
No motive for the crime has yet been suggested.
