Maputo, 17 Jan (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have arrested, in the northern city of Nampula, two individuals in possession of thirty rounds of ammunition for an AK-47 assault rifle, when they were trying to sell them in a local market.
According to the Nampula PRM spokesperson, Rosa Chaúque, who was speaking to reporters, a forensic investigation indicates that the ammunition was brought by the detainees from the port of Nacala on 11 January for sale in Memória market, in the Namicopo neighborhood in Nampula city.
“While on patrol, the police learned that two individuals were selling ammunition in Namicopo, specifically at the Memória market. The police went to the scene and caught them red-handed selling the ammunition for 700 meticais (about 11 US dollars) for each bullet”, he said.
For their part, the detainees claim that they found the thirty rounds in an ammunition clip, which had been thrown onto a rubbish dump, near the army barracks in Nacala.
Chaúque explained that enquiries are currently underway to determine whether or not the case involves a firearm.
“The police are appealing to the public to come forward to the nearest sub-unit whenever they find ammunition or a firearm for the appropriate procedures”, she said.
