Maputo, 7 Feb (AIM) – The outgoing Mayor of Maputo City, Eneas Comiche, inaugurated on Tuesday a health unit budgeted at 260 million meticais (about four million USdollars, at the current exchange rate), in the central neighbourhood of Alto Maé.
The health unit, built on an area of 320 square meters, has three medical offices, an X-ray room, a treatment room, a sterilization room, a dentistry office, a laboratory, a pharmacy and a meeting room.
It joins 30 other health units run by the Maputo City Municipality.
This is the last infrastructure that Comiche inaugurated as mayor of Maputo, since he handed over power on Wednesday to Rasaque Manhique. Both men are from the ruling Frelimo Party. Manhique was declared the winner in Maputo in the municipal elections of 11
October last year, although a credible parallel vote count showed that, in reality, Frelimo had lost, and Venancio Mondlane, the candidate of the main opposition party, Renamo, should be the next mayor.
According to Comiche, the aim of the new centre is to strengthen the health services provided in the municipality, and residents will have more facilities for treatment.
“We expect the health professionals to fulfill their role by disseminating information, knowledge and procedures on disease prevention and control in the best possible way”, he said.
The health centre has 30 employees who will work from 07.30 to 15.00 in the initial phase. Later, services may be extended to 20.00 and, by the end of the year, the centre should be open 24 hours a day.
