Maputo, 8 Apr (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) has seized 55 kilos of cocaine, as well as 30 kilos of hashish in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to the Sernic spokesperson in Cabo Delgado, Noemia João, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, “the drugs were found in a boat, on the beach in the Chuiba neighbourhood, and when our force arrived on the scene, the owners fled.”
“We seized a vehicle and 85 kilograms of drugs, 55 of which were cocaine and 30 kilograms of hashish”, she added.
However, she explained, the Police were unable to find the owner of the drug or discover the origin and destination of it.
A few days after the drugs were seized, SERNIC arrested a 34-year-old Mozambican citizen, allegedly involved in the crime.
“In connection with this case, SERNIC arrested the owner of the car. He was arrested when he came to find out why his car had been seized”, João explained.
Cabo Delgado is considered one of Mozambique’s drug corridors, taking into account that over the last five years almost half a tonne of drugs has been seized there.
