Presidente da República, Filipe Nyusi, inaugura novo bloco do Instituto do Coração
Maputo, 23 Apr (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has called for greater collaboration between the public health system and private clinics in order to better fight disease, through the exchange of crucial information in defense of public health.
The President expressed his thoughts on Monday, in Maputo, during the inauguration of new buildings for the maternity, neonatal, adult and children’s inpatient services, at the privately owned Instituto do Coração [Heart Institute (ICOR)].
He also inaugurated a facility aimed at radiology services, duly equipped with modern MRI equipment.
“This is another milestone in the expansion of health services for the Mozambican population. Collaboration and interdependence is fundamental, not just between the public and private sectors, but even between private organizations”, said Nyusi.
He encouraged other private entities to become examples of collaboration between public institutions and the private sector and to work together to improve access to quality health services for Mozambicans.
“I would also like to call for increased collaboration and complementarity between the public and private systems with a view to implementing joint solutions to health problems. We should never see the private sector as a competing threat”, he urged.
Nyusi appreciated ICOR’s contribution to the treatment of complex illnesses, especially among children from poor households with heart problems.
“In these more than two decades of ICOR’s work, we have witnessed the highest gesture of philanthropy, in which generosity has translated into free surgical interventions for Mozambican children from low-income families”, he said.
The President revealed that the ICOR, with over 2,500 open-heart surgeries carried out free of charge on children and young people, has restored people to a better quality of living.
“ICOR is a strategic partner of the Health Ministry, because it treated patients during the Covid-19 pandemic. We congratulate the decision to honor one of the best sons of our beloved country, the late Dr Pascoal Mocumbi, one of the mentors of this project, by naming the maternity ward after him”, he said.
