Maputo, 16 May (AIM) – The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has disbursed 5.7 million dollars to support small-scale agricultural producers in the southern Mozambican provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, as well as in the northern province of Niassa.
According to IFAD Country Director for Mozambique, Jaana Keitearanta, interviewed by Radio Mozambique, the assistance is under the Programme for Inclusive Development of Agri-Food Value Chains (PROCAVA), which aims to improve the income of small producers by supporting interventions to develop the value chains of vegetables and cassava.
In Maputo province, nearly 5,000 small-scale agricultural producers are already receiving technical assistance, which includes distribution of inputs and sprinkler irrigation kits using a solar energy system.
The initiative, she said, aims to respond to the crisis that is plaguing the country due to the high cost of materials for food production in the regions where PROCAVA operates.
Keitearanta also said that IFAD is considering increasing its support for the agricultural authorities in Maputo province, after receiving a request for more support from the authorities.
