Presidente da República, Filipe Nyusi, que inaugura nova Estação de Tratamento de Águas Residuais na província de Maputo
Maputo, 30 May (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi inaugurated, on Wednesday, a new Waste Water Treatment Plant at Infulene, in the southern municipality of Matola, budgeted at 16 million US dollars, with financial support from the World Bank.
The infrastructure, which will benefit about 129,000 inhabitants in Maputo city and province, will help process the waste water and then return it to the environment or reuse it.
“This project is designed to extend access to human sanitation services, to strengthen the capacity to provide this type of service, not only for the municipality of Maputo, but also for other cities. With this work, we also intend to increase the capacity to respond to city-related emergencies”, he said.
Nyusi said that the project should serve all Mozambicans, regardless of race, ethnicity or party affiliation.
“This project will be for everyone, without racial, tribal, party or religious discrimination. This project is all of us. So we’re going to see this as a collective project, one of inclusion, or a project that is the sacrifice of all Mozambicans”, he said.
The infrastructure includes, among other things, an improved system for the collection and treatment of waste water, faecal sludge and related drainage.
“The treatment plants reduce the materials that pollute the environment and contribute to the spread of disease, and their completion is a source of pride for us”, Nyusi said.
He added that similar projects would be built in the central provinces of Sofala, Zambezia and Tete, and the northern province of Nampula.
The infrastructure is part of the urban sanitation project, and during its construction phase, it removed and compensated over 213 farmers who used to carry out their agricultural activities in the area covered by the plant.
