Maputo, 10 Jun (AIM) – 24 people died on Sunday, in the municipality of Dondo, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, as a result of a road accident involving a passenger bus and a truck.
Another 20 people were injured, seven of them seriously. The bus belonged to the Dondo Municipal Transport Company.
According to the Dondo police spokesperson, Teles Massinga, the passenger bus was travelling on the Dondo-Beira route, and irregular overtaking by the bus driver may have been the cause of the accident.
According to Massinga, the survivors were taken to the city of Beira and the fatalities to the district of Mafambisse, and specialized equipment was mobilized to remove the stricken bus.
The governor of Sofala, Lourenço Bulha, and the Provincial Secretary of State, Cecília Chamutota, went to the Dondo Health Center, where they witnessed the rescue work being carried out.
Bulha called on the population to stay calm and encouraged the health professionals to take care of the injured.
Due to the limited capacity of the Dondo morgue, some bodies had to be taken to the mortuaries of the Beira Central Hospital and the Mafambisse Health Center.
