Maputo, 11 Jun (AIM) – The residents of Nacoba village, in Quissanga district, and of Mandimba village, in Nangade district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, have been experiencing moments of panic as a result of the movements of alleged islamist terrorists who have been plaguing the region.
According to Tuesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, a group of terrorists was seen heading towards Nacoba, in the administrative post of Mahate, a situation that forced the population to flee.
“Here, in Quissanga, we’ve heard that they’re in Nacoba, we don’t know if they’ve entered or not, but people fled when they heard that the terrorists were on their way to the village”, a source said.
Another source said that, with the return of the population to Nacoba village, a Health Centre has come into operation, but he fears that the terrorists may go there to steal medicines.
The terrorist group circulating in the villages of Quissanga district (Nacoba this Monday and Cagembe last week) is presumed to be part of those still occupying the southern region of the Mucojo administrative post, in Macomia district.
In Quissanga, essential public services, namely health and education, have not yet resumed and most of the state employees are still sheltering in the Cabo Delgado provincial capital, Pemba.
In Nangade, fear has also gripped the village of Mandimba, due to the movement of a group of individuals suspected of being terrorists.
“A group of suspected terrorists was seen in the Mandimba area. People got scared and fled to the dstrict capital, but they’ve already returned”, one source said.
