Maputo, 19 Sep (AIM) – The education authorities in Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, have issued an urgent instruction which announces the temporary suspension of requests by students to transfer to other districts.
The instruction, from the District Education, Youth, and Technology Service (SDEJT) comes in response to the growing number of transfer requests submitted by the students’ parents and guardians due to the insecurity in the region, marked by frequent attacks by Islamist terrorist groups.
“The instability has led to a mass movement of the local population in search of areas considered safe, resulting in a significant increase in school transfer requests to other parts of the province”, reads the document.
According to the note, school boards may accept the requests, but they must not proceed with them “until a new decision is taken, which will be communicated after a meeting with department officials scheduled for this Saturday, 20 September.”
The district authorities claim that the measure is aimed at ensuring a coordinated response aligned with the current situation in the district, while evaluating safer and more effective strategies to address the situation.
