Maputo, 23 Sep (AIM) – The first meeting of the National Council of Anamola (National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique), the political party founded by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, the most prominent opposition figure in the country, was budgeted at 4.5 million meticais (70,300 US dollars at the current exchange rate), but ran considerably over budget.
According to the party’s spokesperson, Dinis Tivane, who was speaking to reporters on Monday, during the meeting’s closing ceremony, in the central city of Beira, the National Council finds itself facing a deficit of 1.1 million meticais, “which means that the party is now negotiating with service providers to pay this amount.”
“The initial projection of expenditure for the event indicated that the party would need approximately 4.5 million meticais”, said Tivane. However, in reality expenditure reached 5.6 million meticais, which he regarded as “a very reasonable scenario, given the sacrifices made”.
The National Council has issued an Accountability Report, and Tivane believed the party “has set an example by demonstrating how many donations it raised and how it used them.”
“Besides being the first Mozambican party with a Technological Development department and inventing the first online membership recruitment network, Anamola has demonstrated its financial transparency by submitting an Accountability Report to its National Council”, he said. “Note that less than 45 days after its founding, Venâncio Mondlane’s party is already submitting its accounts”.
“The amount in question was for accommodation of party members and guests, transport, communications and cultural activities”, he added.
Tivane also revealed that the party’s first congress could take place in June 2026 in the northern city of Nampula.
“This is going to be our first congress and we want to show that we are the fastest growing party in Mozambique”, he said.
