Maputo, 17 Nov (AIM) – A group of Islamist terrorists killed at least three people over the last week in Muidumbe district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to local sources, cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the victims include a child.
The terrorists invaded the village of Muambula and fired indiscriminately causing panic and a mass exodus of the population.
“It was during this exodus that the victims were hit by bullets, one of them a student from the Vyaka Sabini Secondary and Community School”, reads the paper.
On Saturday, the terrorists kidnapped a young man and they shot him multiple times. Besides terrorizing and killing, the group also looted businesses.
The situation caused a new wave of displacement, with several families moving to villages and the district headquarters of Mueda in search of safety.
According to the sources, the attack was not met with a response from the Mozambican defence and security forces.
In 2024 alone, at least 349 people died in attacks in northern Mozambique, most claimed by the extremist group Islamic State. This was a 36 per cent increase over the previous year, according to a study released by the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS), an academic institution of the U.S. Department of Defence.
Since 2017, violent extremist attacks in Cabo Delgado have killed at least 4,500 people and displaced over one million.
