Maputo, 11 Sep (AIM) – The Mozambican authorities have detained 16 people, including police officers and airport employees, for alleged involvement in the disappearance of a 20 kilo suitcase containing cocaine at Maputo International Airport.
According to a source from the country’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR), cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the suitcase containing cocaine was being transported by Brazilian women on an Ethiopian Airlines flight on 27 August.
The women were arrested after Interpol alerted the Mozambican authorities about the drugs. However, when the cargo arrived on Mozambican soil it was not seized but was allegedly diverted by the handling service operators and military personnel from the Air Base.
It is believed that the drug was delivered to traffickers waiting in Inhagoia neighbourhood, near the Air Base. If it is true, members of the Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) waited in vain for the arrival of the cargo at the airport, which the criminals ensured did not go through the normal post-landing inspection service.
