Maputo, 14 Oct (AIM) – The National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), the political party set up by former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, has launched its “independent public consultations” for reforming the Mozambican Constitution and the electoral legislation, as part of what the government calls the “inclusive national dialogue.”
The agreement on the “Inclusive National Dialogue” was signed last March by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and nine political parties. It is based on a document which the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, then transformed into a law.
Most of the parties that signed the initial document are tiny and politically irrelevant. The main opposition figure, Venancio Mondlane, who was runner up in the 2024 presidential election, was not involved in those discussions, and his political party, Anamola, had not yet been formed.
But once Anamola had been set up, Mondlane expressed its interest in taking part of the committee organizing the dialogue (COTE). However, the party was not invited to be part of COTE, although it requested a seat.
As a result of its exclusion, the party launched on Monday, in Maputo, its parallel public consultation to gather opinions that will be sent later to COTE.
Judging by the massive attendance at his rallies all over the country, Mondlane is easily the most popular opposition figure in the country. If he and Anamola are excluded from the dialogue, its results are unlikely to be taken seriously.
According to Mondlane, speaking during the ceremony launch, Anamola has laid the fundamental basis for the country’s ongoing “national dialogue”
“This consultation is aimed at covering more people and we hope that many people may benefit from these efforts. The 20 points that today are the fundamental basis of the national political dialogue came directly from Anamola”, he said.
“Normally, everything we fight for, we never benefit from. All those who were the founders of the nation, normally, do not benefit from either the independence or the prosperity of the country. Their role is to lay the foundations for future generations to benefit from this struggle”, he added.
Mondlane explained that his party’s consultation will cover the entire country, including “provinces, districts, localities and neighborhoods. We intend to reach as many people as possible, because we believe that the opinion of each person counts”, he said.
“We had already launched the campaign through social media and we have been receiving responses from various parts of the country. This digital campaign will take place simultaneously with the physical consultation”, he said.
