Maputo, 7 Jun (AIM) – A group of criminals on Saturday shot dead a police officer in Acordos de Lusaka neighborhood, southern city of Matola.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was followed by the criminals before being killed while inside his car. “Before the shots that caused the officer’s death, there was a brief argument between the victim and unidentified individuals”, a source said.
The country’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) went to the scene to collect evidence and begin investigations aimed at identifying the perpetrators of the crime, as well as clarifying the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
This is yet another case of persecution and assassinations against police officers. Similar cases have been taking place especially in Matola city. Some people believe that these crimes are related to the wave of kidnappings and settling of scores between police officers involved in criminal schemes.
However, the Mozambique Police (PRM) has not commented on the matter yet.
According to the Strategic Analysis Report (RAE), published by the Mozambican Financial Intelligence Office (GIFiM), the wave of kidnappings has generated, since 2014, over 33 million dollars in money laundering.
