Viaturas voltam a circular na N1 em Gaza
Maputo, 21Aug (AIM) – Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) has secured 50 million US dollars for the rehabilitation of some sections of the country’s main north-south highway (EN1).
The amount will be disbursed by the Saudi Fund for Development. According to Miguel Coanai, ANE Deputy Director-General, the fund aimed at rehabilitating and widening of two specific sections along EN1: the stretch between Benfica and Zimpeto (Lot I) and the stretch between 03 de Fevereiro and Incoluane (Lot II), in Maputo city and province.
“Plans also include the construction of new hydraulic crossings and the rehabilitation and expansion of existing ones, with the aim of reducing the risk of stormwater overtopping and road closures during the rainy season”, he said.
Coanai explained that the 6.7 km stretch between Benfica and Zimpeto, a major rehabilitation will take place, including construction of two additional traffic lanes and a central median, building drainage systems and sidewalks, installing street lighting, and erecting five pedestrian bridges “to ensure citizens can cross the road safely.”
“Furthermore, we plan to build new grade-separated interchanges to provide access to the Zimpeto National Stadium”, he said.
Regarding the second lot, the plan is to implement a new engineering approach along a 17 km stretch, aiming to eliminate the risk of stormwater overtopping and road washouts during the rainy season.
“Specifically, the project entails reconstructing the road, raising its elevation by approximately 1.0 meter, and widening it from the current 7.8 meters to 12.4 meters”, he said.
According to the Deputy Director-General, ANE will launch the tender for the work before the end of this year.
This is not the first time that the authorities announce the rehabilitation of the country’s main north-south highway. The rehabilitation failed to take place in 2024 and 2025 without any understandable public explanation.
