Maputo, 09 Sep (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) has announced the recovery of two vehicles stolen by insurgents during the attack that took place last Thursday in Marrupa district, northern province of Niassa.
The attack took place exactly in the southern boundary of Niassa Special Reserve, forcing the displacement of over 2,700 people. The incursion is believed to be the work of the same Islamist terrorists who have been operating in several of the districts of Cabo Delgado.
According to Osvaldo Mahando, Police spokesperson in Niassa, cited by the daily newspaper “Notícias”, the vehicles (a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Land Cruiser) were used by the armed group to facilitate its movements during the attacks.
These vehicles were recorded by the country’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) on the banks of the Ruambeze River, where they had been abandoned. They belonged to Mozambique Wild Adventures (MWA) tourist camps.
Mahando also revealed that the 11 employees kidnapped during the operation are still missing but the “Defence and Security Forces are conducting search and rescue operations in the field to locate the victims and return them to their families.”
This is the second known major terrorist attack against Niassa Province. In 2025 June, the terrorists destroyed the facilities of the Kambako hunting ground, one of the hunting areas in the Niassa Special Reserve, not far from the Cabo Delgado’s districts of Meluco, Montepuez and Mueda. During the invasion, the terrorists also took an unspecified number of people hostage.
