
Ilesh Jani New Deputy Minister Of Health
Maputo, 20 Jan (AIM) – Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday promoted the General Director of the National Institute of Health (INS), Ilesh Gani, to the post of Deputy Minister of Health.
Jani, who was one of leaders of last year’s highly successful vaccination campaign against the Covid-19 pandemic, replaces Farida Abdula Urci.
Jani obtained his first degree in medicine from Maputo’s Eduardo Mondlane University in 1998, and took a doctorate in immunology in University College, London, in 2003. He has published articles in several prestigious magazines, including the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Lancet.
He is a member of the Strategic Consultative Group of Experts on Vaccination (SAGE) set up by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (ICREID).
Jani has worked at the INS since 1998. From 2003 to 2009 he was head of the INS Immunology Department and from 2009 to the present he has been General Director of the INS.
Nyusi also appointed former Defence Minister Jaime Neto as Secretary of State for the northern province of Nampula, replacing Mety Gondola. Judith Massacula is transferred from the central province of Zambezia to replace Victoria Diogo as Secretary of State for Maputo province.
Ste0fan Mphiri, former director of the Maputo International School, becomes Secretary of State for Manica, replacing Edson Macuacua, and Lina Portugal, former permanent secretary of Tete province, replaces Dinis Vilanculo as Secretary of State for Niassa.
Nyusi also re-appointed Amalia Uamusse as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Eduardo Mondlane University.
