
Policeman Murdered BY Illegal Miners
Nampula (Mozambique), 26 Jan (AIM) – An agent of the Mozambican police force (PRM) died in hospital in the northern city of Nampula, after he was attacked on Sunday by a group of illegal miners in the Nametil administrative post, in Mogovolas district.
The Mogovolas district administrator, Emanuel Impissa, confirmed the death of the policeman in an interview with Radio Mozambique on Tuesday. He said the clash occurred in an area reserved for the State, where semi-precious stones have been discovered.
In Sunday’s disturbances, the illegal miners attacked the three policemen sent to protect the area. The policemen were later taken to Nampula Central Hospital, where one of them died of his injuries. His assailants had attacked him with pickaxes.
The head of public relations of the Nampula provincial police command, Dercio Samuel, also confirmed the incident to the radio. He said a police team had gone to the scene of the crime, to carry out further investigations. He promised to give more details “in due time”.
