Maputo, 25 Jul (AIM) – Two armed men assaulted, on Saturday night, the Namaacha District Prison, 70 kilometres from Maputo, killing a prison guard named Ilton Fernando Sitoe and wounding another, David Chichava.
According to the independent newssheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the Minister of Justice, Helena Kida, has confirmed the case.
According to reports, the men fled the scene when they realized that an alert had triggered elements of the Mozambican Police (PRM). The alert was raised by the injured officer, who managed to flee to the nearby police station.
When the PRM officers launched a chase, the two assailants fled towards the Eswatini border and their trail was lost. In the pursuit, a third man, whom the Mozambican authorities suspect was part of the group, was wounded in an exchange of fire. Together with the injured prison guard, he was taken to Maputo Provincial Hospital.
