Maputo, 18 Oct (AIM) – The Mozambican government and its partners intend to invest 290 million dollars over the next 15 years in the expansion and modernization of the central port of Beira.
According to the Minister of Transport, Mateus Magala, who was speaking at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the concession of Beira cargo terminals to the Dutch company Cornelder, the government has approved the port business plan to be implemented, taking into account the market conditions.
As a result of these investments, the minister said, the port will improve its container handling capacity, from 300,000 to 700,000 per year.
The minister challenged Cornelder to proceed with the planned investments in order to handle one million containers a year.
He added that these investments may speed up socio-economic growth in the central region of the country, improving the county’s role as a logistics hub in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
In 2018, the government approved the extension of the port concession for a further 15 years.
“After 25 years, we saw the professional work carried out by Cornelder. The company knows how to follow the government’s plans to turn the port into a regional leader”, Magala said.
