Maputo, 28 Nov (AIM) – A gang of kidnappers shot a Maputo businessman on Monday night, but were unable to abduct him because passers-by intervened to rescue him.
The incident happened on 24 July Avenue, in the heart of the city. The victim, whose name has not yet been released, owns a textile shop, and he was surprised by the kidnappers at about 18.00, as he was closing up for the night.
According to eyewitnesses, cited by the independent television station STV, the kidnappers grabbed him and tried to drag him to their vehicle. When he resisted, they shot him in the legs.
At this point, passers-by intervened. One eye-witness said “a courageous young man took a large stone and threw it at the bandits. They saw that other members of the public were coming, and so they ran away”.
