Maputo, 7 Mar (AIM) – The authorities have reopened six of the 63 schools that were closed as a result of recent terrorist attacks in Chiùre district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to the Cabo Delgado provincial director of education, Ivaldo Quincardete, cited by Radio Mozambique, the schools in question are located in the Ocua administrative post.
“The reopening of the six schools is due to the return of families who were displaced. They returned thanks to the improvement of security conditions in the region. There is work that the security forces are carrying out in order to guarantee more security”, said Quincardete.
He explained that the resumption of classes in the six schools covers a total of 2,195 pupils.
“At the district level, we are carrying out work on re-opening schools that are still closed in the other administrative posts”, he said.
Cabo Delgado is rich in natural gas and many other minerals, but has been plagued by terrorist attacks since 2017 perpetrated by jihadist groups causing the deaths of over 3,000 people, most of them civilians.
