Maputo, May 6 (AIM) – Over 22,000 farming households are suffering from severe hunger in Dondo district, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, as a result of the El Nino” weather phenomenon.
According to the head of the Dondo District Economic Activities Services, Miguel Rabeca, cited by Radio Mozambique, the lack of rain associated with the El Niño phenomenon has caused the loss of about 20,000 hectares of various crops.
“The situation is of greatest concern in the regions of Chinamacondo, Chibuabuabua and Mutua, which need rapid intervention”, he said.
In order to minimize the situation, Rabeca said, those affected will receive food assistance and agricultural inputs in the coming days.
