Maputo, 8 May (AIM) – The Mozambican Police (PRM) have denied a story that went viral on social media, concerning the alleged abduction of a girl during the weekend.
According to the story, the kidnappers held up a school bus that was carrying nine children, one of whom was then abducted.
The story also claimed that the bus driver was murdered and his body was buried in Zona Verde neighbourhood, in the southern municipality of Matola. One of the kidnappers is also supposed to have confessed to selling two childen.
The PRM spokesperson in Maputo city, Leonel Muchina, cited in Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, dismissed the entire story as false.
“This information is not true and it never happened. However, we regret the way it is being shared on social media because it is creating a stir among many parents and carers, especially those whose children use school buses”, he said.
Muchina explained that after the Police heard this story, it made enquiries at all the police stations in the outlying neighbourhood of Zimpeto, where the crime supposedly happened. However, there was no confirmation of the case.
“At the Zimpeto police stations, here have been no reports of children being kidnapped. This is all misinformation”, said Muchina.
