Maputo, 18 Jun (AIM) – A Mozambican NGO, the Association of Women for the Promotion of Community Development, has called for action against child prostitution, since the number of minors turning to prostitution is on the increase in the central province of Sofala.
According to the executive director of the association, Ângela Jorge, cited by Rádio Moçambique, the phenomenon occurs mainly in Beira city, and the districts of Dondo, Nhamatanda, Chibabava and Caia.
In order to reduce the number of cases, Jorge believes that society “must unite in the fight against child prostitution.”
“The increase in cases of child prostitution in Sofala is worrying. There is a need for synergies to stop the situation, because over two thousand girls are involved in prostitution”, she said.
Most of the girls, she added, are aged between 13 and 19.
“There are cases of girls being sexually abused, and forced into prostitution”, she said. “Sometimes it’s the age of adolescence that leads them into it. In other cases, it’s family breakdown, it’s the social context they’re in”.
