Maputo, 7 Jul (AIM) – Residents of the Magoanine CMC neighbourhood in Maputo city on Friday blocked the city’s ring road, in protest at the Municipal Council’s failure to collect rubbish for the previous two weeks.
According to a report in the independent daily “O Pais”, the protest forced the Council to mobilise a truck and dozens of workers to clear the garbage.
The protest began early in the morning. CMC residents took the rubbish out of the Council’s overflowing containers, and dumped it onto the ring road. This forced traffic to come to a standstill and the police were obliged to intervene.
The situation on the ring road only returned to normal when a truck and a brigade of more than 50 workers arrived to clear away the garbage.
The residents say that the overflowing garbage containers are badly located. They add that they emit a repellent stench and pose a threat to their health and to the environment.
Magoanine CMC is not the only outlying Maputo neighbourhood facing this problem. In Zimpeto neighbourhood, the containers are full, and have not been emptied for days.
