Maputo, 26 Jul (AIM) – Continuing his tour of the country, the candidate of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party in the October presidential election, Daniel Chapo, on Thursday reached Maputo, where a crowd of Frelimo militants pledged him their unconditional support.
In the outlying neighbourhood of Hulene, President Filipe Nyusi introduced Chapo to the crowd, declaring that he is the person best suited to lead the country for the next five years.
Nyusi said that Chapo will serve the Mozambican people, which was why Frelimo had chosen him as its presidential candidate. He was sure that Chapo was perfectly in tune with the ambitions, desires and anxieties of the population.
Chapo told the crowd he is the youngest candidate ever to stand in a Mozambican presidential election. “I am the only candidate who was born after independence”, he declared.
Chapo promised that he will bring “real solutions” to the current challenges, and asked Mozambicans to deposit their trust in him and in Frelimo.
He stressed his commitment to the industrialization of Mozambique, which would create more job opportunities for young people.
He linked industrialisation to the need for further investments in agriculture, and promised to promote linkages along the agro-business chain of production. Commercial agriculture, he claimed, is a key factor for increasing production and productivity.
His government, Chapo promised, would bank on building decent houses for young Mozambicans, “taking into account the real challenges that young people face”.
“We are not promising to do everything at the same time”, he said. “We shall work in phases. We shall deliver land with infrastructures so that young people, based on their own wages and savings, can build their houses”.
Chapo added that he will also bank on the professional training of young people because “know-how is the key to self-employment, which will be guaranteed on the basis of the entrepreneurial spirit. We want youths to learn electricity, carpentry, metalworking and other professions so that they gain skills”.
He also pledged that his government will set up a development bank, with lines of finance for young Mozambicans and favourable interest rates.
“We have to invest in our young people, because they have strength, intelligence, creativity and determination”, he declared. “The only thing missing is the opportunity to show their potential”.
