Chimoio (Mozambique) 30 Jul (AIM) – Saimone Macuiane, the candidate from Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, for governor of the central province of Manica in the forthcoming provincial elections, has promised that, should he be elected, he will prioritise the rehabilitation of water supply systems and the fight against corruption.
Macuiana worked over the weekend in the provincial capital, Chimoio, where he was publicly presented as candidate for governor.
“We want to provide more water to the public through boreholes or even through making use of water from the rivers”, he said. He added that a dam would be built, not only for human consumption, but also for irrigation.
“Our goal is to meet the expectations of the population. We shall serve the citizens better”, Macuiana promised. “We shall turn our election manifesto into concrete actions with an impact on the lives of the residents of Manica”.
He claimed that the Mozambican health system “has stopped working. Today the health units have no medicines. Health professionals have no morale to go on working. We as Renamo are banking on creating better conditions for the professionals”.
Macuiana added that corruption is another evil that is holding back the development of Mozambique.
“When pregnant women go to hospital, they are charged money to be properly attended”, he claimed. “The problem isn’t just in health. We see it in education, in the police and in other public services. It is in our plan of governance to do away with this evil”.
Macuiana urged the public to go to the polling stations on 9 October to exercise their voting rights. “Our message is that all registered voters should go, early in the morning, to their polling station to elect the President of the Republic, the parliamentary deputies, and the provincial governor. Don’t let anybody else chose for you”.
