Maputo, 5 Aug (AIM) – Two agents of the Mozambican police force (PRM) are under preventive detention in the central district of Manica, for their alleged involvement in robbing a gold mine belonging to Chinese investors.
According to a report carried by the independent television station, STV, during the robbery the policemen shot two of the mining company’s security guards and stole money and gold.
The robbery occurred last Thursday. The two PRM agents were guarding a mine named ASIL, but they left their posts and went to a neighbouring mine, Zanida Mineral, which they intended to rob.
According to a guard from Caba Seguranca, the company hired to protect Zanida Mineral, the policemen-turned-thieves opened fire against the security guards.
According to the hospital in the provincial capital, Chimoio, the victims of the shooting are out of danger.
Police sources told STV that the two thieves had made off with 150,000 meticais in cash ((2,300 dollars, at the current exchange rate), and about 800 grams of gold.
