Maputo, 2 Sep (AIM) – Islamist terrorists ambushed a Rwandan police patrol on Saturday night, in Mocimboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
The Mocimboa da Praia district administrator, Sergio Cipriano, interviewed by Mozambican Television (TVM) said that “at about 22.15, a patrol of the Rwandan forces fell into an ambush set by the terrorists. This resulted in an exchange of gunfire, and one young girl lost her life. The terrorists then fled”.
There were no reports of casualties among either the Rwandans or the jihadists.
Cipriano said the situation is under control. The Mozambican defence and security forces are on alert so that the situation remains controlled.
“The situation is calm”, insisted the administrator. “The fishermen have gone out to sea, and those who work as farmers have gone back to their fields”.
Ciprino said there may have been an attack elsewhere in the district, but the information has not yet been confirmed.
“Some people say they heard shots, but we don’t have any confirmed data yet”, he added. “The police are working on it”.
Cipriano urged the public to strengthen their vigilance, and to warn the Mozambican and Rwandan forces if they notice any unusual movements.
