Maputo, 4 Sep (AIM) – Lutero Simango, candidate of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) in the presidential election scheduled for 9 October, has promised to boost cotton production in the central province of Zambezia if he is elected.
Speaking on Tuesday, in the Zambezia district of Morrumbala, Simango said that his government will improve the production of cotton and revive the Morrumbala cotton factory, which has closed due to a lack of raw materials.
“We’re going to reopen the Cotton Factory. To do this we have to increase cotton production, which will then be absorbed by the factory. That way, everyone will have a lot of money, because they’ll be able to sell their production at a good price. With the factory there will be more jobs for the young people of Morrumbala”, Simango claimed, cited by the independent paper “O País.”
“We want jobs in Morrumbala, we need to put an end to fraud in the area, we want more roads, electricity and so on. We’re going to do all that and much more. Here in Morrumbala, we want to improve life”, he said.
“Here, in Morrumbala, there is production of cotton, beans and other products that, if well managed, can boost business, create jobs and improve your lives. The MDM projects will give Mozambicans purchasing power by lowering the cost of living”, he declared.
He said that the Mozambican textile industry is dependent on imports and this makes products more expensive. “Therefore we’re also going to set up a small factory to produce medicinal cotton to reduce its shortage in the national health system”, he pledged.
Also in Zambezia, the independent presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, promised voters that, if elected, he will promote and fund self-employment for young people.
In the districts of Milange and Maganja da Costa, Mondlane led marches and told his audience “we want to assure young people, who want to work, those who have projects and want to do something, that my government will open up lines of funding for youth projects.”
“With the government of Venâncio Mondlane, you will benefit from the resources that the country has”, he promised. “We don’t just want to be famous for being a rich country. We want that wealth to be reflected in our lunch and dinner every day at home”.
Mondlane, who is backed by PODEMOS (Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique), also promised to reform the public administration by de-politicising it, and improving the pay and working conditions.
“It is all the people who should be served, regardless of their political party. This is called the de-politicisation of the state”, he said.
