Maputo, 9 Sep (AIM) – At least two people have lost their lives and over 100 were injured as a result of three road accidents during the second week of the campaign for the presidential, parliamentary and provincial election scheduled for 9 October.
According to the anti-corruption NGO, the Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), in its Bulletin on the elections, all three accidents involved vehicles carrying members of the ruling Frelimo party.
Two accidents took place, last Monday, in Sussundega district, in the central province of Manica. The third took place, on Wednesday, at the Mulongozi River, Milange district, in the central province of Zambezia.
In the first accident, said CIP, “The side panel of the pick-up truck in which the Frelimo party supporters were travelling opened, causing them to fall out. The fatal victim was taken to the Sussundenga Health Centre morgue. The second involved a car from Mavuze, in Manica, which was also carrying other members of Frelimo. The car overturned, causing one serious injury and several minor injuries. The driver lost control of the vehicle and the serious victim, whose leg was broken, was taken to the Sussundenga health centre and later transferred to the Chimoio Provincial Hospital”.
“The third accident took place on Wednesday in Milange and resulted in one confirmed death and 92 injuries. On the return journey, the bus carrying the party members lost control at the Mulongozi river on the Milange-Majaua road”, it added.
The district director of Health and Social Welfare in Milange confirmed that 93 patients were taken to hospital, where one of them died. Three are in a serious condition and have been transferred to Quelimane Central Hospital. The driver of the bus, which was carrying just over 100 people, was allegedly drunk.
