Maxixe (Mozambique), 9 Sep (AIM) – Daniel Chapo, presidential candidate of the ruling Frelimo party, has pledged that, if he is elected in the elections scheduled for 9 October, he will work to solve the problem of erosion, which is threatening to overwhelm entire neighbourhoods in the city of Maxixe, the economic capital of the southern province of Inhambane.
Heavy rains have carved enormous ravines into the Maxixe neighbourhoods that line the bay of Inhambane.
“Maxixe faces a chronic problem of erosion”, said Chapo at an election rally on Sunday in the city. “There are concrete projects to solve this evil which is threatening to destroy some neighbourhoods. We haven’t done anything before, because we were intervening in other districts”.
Chapo also wanted to see the town of Morrumbene, elevated to the status of a municipality.
“With the work that has been done, Morrumbene is now in a position to be raised to the category of municipality. The town will experience accelerated growth, becoming a centre for development in Inhambane province”, he said.
Chapo also promised to rehabilitate the Cambine Mission, a historic education institution where Eduardo Mondlane, the founder of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), once studied.
His plans also include rehabilitating the road from Maxixe to the districts of Homoine and Panda, and mobilizing investments to expand the water supply network.
Venancio Mondlane, the independent candidate for the presidency, has promised to promote Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) if he wins.
Speaking on Sunday to potential voters in Cuamba district, in the northern province of Niassa, Mondlane said that his government will favor SMEs because they are crucial for the country’s development.
“We also want to invest in water for human consumption and agro-industrial production, expanding the network of catchment and storage units; promoting investment in small and medium-scale groundwater units for human consumption, and abolishing the government’s recent decision to tax groundwater exploration”, he said.
Mondlane added that “We want to expand modernization of broadband infrastructure, especially in peri-urban and rural areas, we want to work on the expansion of the 5G network in the main urban areas; the installation of local data centres to improve the security and speed of communications, as well as guaranteeing affordable internet for all social strata”.
