Maputo, 14 Sep (AIM) – Ossufo Momade, the leader and presidential candidate of Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, has suggested that the country should have three capitals, in the south, centre and north.
At a rally on Mozambique Island, in his home province of Nampula, Momade told reporters, that, if elected President, he intends to change the Constitution, so that the country can have more than one capital.
Under Momade’s proposed constitutional amendment, there would be three capitals, “the political capital, Maputo, the parliamentary capital, Beira, and the economic capital, Nampula city. That’s because we want development. We want all these three great cities to be developed, because currently everything is in Maputo”.
He did not say how much such an administrative upheaval would cost. This is just the latest uncosted promise thrown out by a politician at an election rally.
On a more mundane level, Momade promise to rehabilitate the local hospital (where he was born), and to pave the streets of Mozambique island.
In the nearby district of Mossuril, he also promised to pave the roads, and build schools and hospitals.
“We also want to do away with corruption in the public administration”, he declared. “Citizens deserve to be properly served by public officials”.
He urged members of the public, even members of the ruling Frelimo Party, “to vote for Renamo and Ossufo Momade, because we are the salvation of Mozambique”.
